SX10SR With Winch Cradle Install By Airstream Nerds

Airstream Nerds Jeff and Jenny love the outdoors, and they regularly head out camping in their Airstream travel trailer. But whether you are planning to conquer a mountain path when you get there or just want to ensure you don’t get stuck along the way, a high-quality winch is an essential piece of gear.

Check out the video below for a walkthough of the install process for a SX10SR Superwinch and winch mount, and learn just how useful both can be.

The Superwinch SX10SR In Detail

The Superwinch SX10SR is a robust winch designed with innovative features such as a patented drum light, relocatable die-cast aluminum control box, 3/8″ diameter synthetic rope, a 12′ lighted wired remote, and wireless handheld remote.

Providing 10,000 lbs. of raw pulling power, our SX Series winches have a sleek modern look and are built to last. With an IP68 rating for dustproof and waterproof operation, and a durable powder-coated finish this winch has it all.

  • 10,000 lbs. capacity and 5.5 HP sealed motor
  • Heavy duty clevis winch hook
  • Aluminum hawse fairlead
  • 100% full load holding automatic mechanical brake
  • IP68-rated waterproof and dustproof
  • 3-stage planetary gearing with 218:1 ratio
  • Patented drum light

Having had a different winch model fail on them during the depths of winter, the Airstream Nerds were please to notice how solid and robust the SX10R was straight out of the box.

One of the key safety features the Airstream Nerds were pleased to see is the wireless handheld remote, which lets you stand well out of harm’s way when operating the winch.

“A remote allows you to get safe enough distance away from your winch line so if it does snap and this solid hunk-o-metal hook goes flying it doesn’t take you out – so a very good safety measure to have a remote! It’s also cool – I’m not going to lie about that!”

Jeff, Airstream Nerds

In addition to the wireless remote, there is also a lighted wired remote with a 12’ cable for when you are pulling items that don’t put the winch under severe tension. This SX winch featured in the video came with synthetic rope, but a steel version with a graphite finish is also available, as well as a more powerful 12,000 lb. unit in graphite and Midnight Black finishes. Winch And Winch Cradle Install

As the video shows, installing the winch was easy, as all the mounting components and hardware are supplied with every order, including comprehensive installation instructions.

A universal cradle hitch mount is key for ultimate versatility. It is also extremely simple to install, and all hardware and detailed instructions are included as well.

“I didn’t really want the weight of a permanent hook up for a winch on the front of our vehicle –  but I do have a lot of uses for a winch – hence a hitch receiver!”

Jeff, Airstream Nerds

Seeing as the Airstream Nerds plan to only use the winch occasionally, it was hooked up to a jump box instead of wired into the vehicle’s electronics, allowing Jeff to remove and store it whenever it wasn’t needed.

Always remember to insert the provided hitch pin when mounting the winch cradle to your vehicle before you operate the winch! Jeff also mentions that wearing gloves and following the correct protocols when winching is crucial for safety. Of course, there are plenty more safe winching essentials to consider – check them out here.
