If you have never wheeled in Hurricane, Utah, in January, you are missing out on one of the most unique off-road experiences in the country. The Winter 4×4 Jamboree just wrapped up another massive week at the Sand Mountain Special Recreation Management Area (better known as Sand Hollow), and the builds this year were nothing short of spectacular.
While the scenery is breathtaking – bright red sandstone contrasting against snow-capped peaks in the distance – the terrain is unforgiving. From the deceptive grip of the sandstone to the soft dunes that trap the unprepared, this event is the ultimate test of traction and recovery gear.
Here is a look at the history behind this massive gathering and a deep dive into three of the trails that challenged drivers this year: The Ledges, John’s Trail, and the infamous Double Sammy.
The History Of The Winter 4×4 Jamboree

The Winter 4×4 Jamboree isn’t just a meet and greet. It is a masterclass in land stewardship. Organized by the Desert Roads and Trails Society (Desert RATS), the event was established circa 2015 with a very specific mission: to promote responsible land use and keep public lands open to off-roaders.
What started as a local gathering has exploded into a premier event, drawing thousands of participants and spectators annually. The best part? The proceeds go toward keeping trails open, trail maintenance, and donating to local charities. When you register for the Jamboree, you’re investing in the future of the sport.
Conquering Sand Mountain
Sand Hollow offers a mix of rated trails from 1 (scenic dirt roads) to 10 (buggy-only territory). This year, we saw plenty of action on three fan-favorite routes.
John’s Trail (Rating: 6-7 / 10)
- The Vibe: Technical, twisty, and unrelenting.
- The Specs: Stepping up the difficulty, Johns Trail is where locker usage becomes almost mandatory. This trail is famous for its off-camber cracks and steep sandstone climbs that force your suspension to flex to its limits.
- The Challenge: The challenge here isn’t just one big obstacle; it’s the consistency of them. You are constantly navigating notches and steep descents. It’s a driver’s trail – you need to pick your lines carefully to avoid body damage. A 35-inch tire and at least one locker are generally recommended to get through without pulling cable (though having your winch ready is never a bad idea here).
The Ledges (Rating: 7-8 / 10)
- The Vibe: Scenic, accessible, but certainly not boring.
- The Specs: As the name implies, this trail traces the rim of the mesa, offering some of the best panoramic views of the park. However, it’s got plenty of ‘pucker factor’ and steep descents that can make even experienced drivers nervous, some sections may even force your rig onto its side.
- Why We Love It: The sandstone ledges require proper tire placement, and the sandy transitions can catch you off guard. It’s the perfect shakedown run to test your limits.
Double Sammy (Rating: 8 / 10)
- The Vibe: A playground for the Big Dogs.
- The Specs: Double Sammy is legendary. It is one of the most popular high-difficulty trails at Sand Hollow for a reason. It packs a massive amount of technical crawling into a relatively short distance.
- The Obstacles: The trail is a maze of chutes, V-notches, and massive vertical steps. The famous ‘Chute’ obstacle is a rite of passage – a steep, narrow slickrock climb that loves to twist driveshafts and test sidewalls.
- The Gear Check: This is where you see the heavy-duty builds shine. We’re talking 37+ inch tires, front and rear lockers, and body armor. On Double Sammy, recovery gear isn’t an accessory; it’s a necessity. It is common to see vehicles winching up the steeper ledges when the high-traction sandstone just isn’t enough to fight gravity.
Prepare For The Rocks With Superwinch

Whether you are cruising The Ledges or battling gravity on Double Sammy, the Winter 4×4 Jamboree proves that the right gear makes all the difference. Sand Hollow’s sandstone offers incredible grip, but when you slip, you usually find yourself high-centered or in a precarious off-camber spot.
