Single Vs. Dual Battery Winch Power

There’s no doubt that a winch is one of the most essential pieces of equipment for an off roader. But, depending on your vehicle and how you plan to use your winch, you may want to consider adding a dual battery setup. In this blog we discuss the pros and cons of both single and dual battery winching solutions to help you make the right choice.

What’s The Difference Between Single And Dual Battery Setups?

When buying a winch, the mounting location and pull capacity are important considerations. But many first-time off roaders don’t consider how much power the winch needs to operate effectively.

Single Battery Winching

In the majority of cases a winch will be wired up to the vehicle’s primary battery. This is sufficient for a wide range of winches and low to medium intensity winching duties. But, the winch draws its power directly from the primary battery, so if it goes flat you may not be able to start your vehicle.

‘How often are you actually using your winch? If it’s like me, I’ve used mine twice since I’ve had it. I don’t see the need for a dual battery setup at the moment.’

Dual Battery Winching

A dual battery setup means that a secondary battery is installed to power the winch. It can be isolated from the primary battery so the vehicle can start even if the secondary battery goes completely flat.

‘I only have a single battery and have used my winch 4-5 times since I installed it. It definitely drains the battery pretty quick…’

When Do You Really Need A Dual Battery setup?

Serious off roaders who use their winches frequently and for long periods may want to consider a dual battery setup. Regardless of how many batteries you install, the engine should always be running at a fast idle to allow the alternator to keep the battery charged and to prevent it from discharging completely. Always allow sufficient time for the winch motor to cool down between pulls.

‘You probably won’t need a dual battery until you really need your winch. If you have to do multiple long pulls you can kill your battery even with the truck running.’

How Much Does A Dual Battery Setup Cost?

The cost of having a dual battery setup varies based on battery size, vehicle type, and whether a larger alternator and isolator are needed. The secondary battery will also need to be wired up correctly and installed in a suitable location, as there is often not enough space under the hood. Once you factor in the battery, labor, and associated parts, you can budget between $700 to $1000 for the job.

Can I Install A Dual Battery Setup Myself?

Fitting a secondary battery as a DIY job is possible, but you will need a decent understanding of automotive electrical systems. You will also need the correct capacity battery, an isolator, fuses, cabling and possibly a more powerful alternator as well. Connecting it up to the winch is also relatively straightforward. However, it needs to be done right to avoid damaging the winch motor or vehicle’s electrical system.
