Complete Guide To Winch Line Spooling With The Scorpion 10SR

Many modern rigs have tighter bumper clearances, and massive, heavy winches can block vital airflow and modern front-facing trail cameras. Even more detrimental to your rig, bolting an 85-pound chunk of steel to your front bumper can cause unwanted front-end sag.

The engineering team at Superwinch heard the off-road community loud and clear. We set out to create a capable 10,000lb winch and shrink its size without shrinking its capacity – enter the Superwinch Scorpion 10SR.

Big Pull, Small Footprint

The Scorpion 10SR completely redefines what a 10,000 lb recovery tool looks like. Traditional 10k winches can weigh around 85 lbs and stretch to roughly 22 inches in length. The Scorpion 10SR trims the fat, coming in at an incredibly compact 16.4 inches and just 53 lbs.

By drastically shrinking the footprint, the Scorpion 10SR solves the modern overlander’s dilemma. Its integrated control box and shorter profile mean you maintain crucial airflow to your radiator, keep your front camera views unobstructed, and easily fit the unit into today’s compact, high-clearance aftermarket bumpers.

Next-Level Trail Tech And Efficiency

Don’t let the compact size fool you; this winch is an absolute workhorse. Here’s why the Scorpion 10SR is a perfect fit for your off-road recovery kit:

  • Dual-Speed 1.9 HP Permanent Magnet Motor: Tackle heavy pulls in low gear (437:1 ratio for a full 10,000 lbs of power) or switch to high gear (156:1 ratio) for fast line speeds on pulls under 3,500 lbs.
  • Low Amp Draw: Traditional 10k winches often demand a dual-battery setup. The Scorpion 10SR boasts a remarkably low maximum draw of just 258 amps, meaning it gets the job done safely on a single 12-volt battery system.
  • Night-Recovery Ready: When the sun dips below the tree line, recoveries get dangerous. The Scorpion features Superwinch’s patented lighted drum, giving you vital visibility. You can activate it via the included 12-foot wired remote, which also features a built-in, auto-charging flashlight. (A wireless remote is also included so you can manage pulls from a safe distance).
  • Uncompromising Safety: Featuring an overload interrupter that automatically shuts down at 10,000 lbs, dynamic no-load braking for controlled descents, and a 100% fully automatic load-holding brake.
  • Trail-Proof Durability: IP68 rated for ultimate dust and waterproof protection, wrapped up with a limited lifetime warranty and a 7-year warranty on electrical components.

How To Spool Your Synthetic Winch Rope

Your Scorpion 10SR is pre-tested at the factory. However, it arrives unspooled out of the box because the included 3/8 in x 54 ft synthetic rope features a heavy-duty integrated soft shackle, which is too large to fit through your fairlead if it were pre-wound.

Loading the line and setting the tension properly is vital for maximum pulling power and long-term rope performance. Here is your step-by-step guide to spooling your Scorpion 10SR:

  1. Locate the Taped End: Start by finding the taped end of your synthetic rope (this is the end opposite of the soft shackle).
  2. Feed Through the Fairlead: Pass the taped end through your fairlead and route it toward the holes in the drum.
    • Pro-Tip: Ensure you are feeding the rope away from yourself through the holes, not pulling it toward you.
  3. Route Across the Drum: Push the taped end through the drum holes and pull the rope all the way across the full length of the drum.
  4. Tape it Down: Lay the rope flat against the drum’s surface. Take a roll of electrical tape and tape the line securely to the drum, working your way across the entire length of the steel drum.
  5. Begin the Pre-Spool: Set your winch into low gear. Using your remote, slowly begin winching the line in to establish your base wraps on the spool. Stop when you reach the red warning portion of the rope.
  6. Set Up for Tensioning: Now, take the soft shackle end of the rope and secure it to a solid, immovable mounting point (like a sturdy tree with a tree-saver strap, or another heavy vehicle).
  7. Spool Under Load: Leave your vehicle in neutral and keep your foot off the brake. Use your remote to slowly winch your vehicle toward the anchor point. The sheer weight of your rig will provide the necessary tension to pack the rope tightly and evenly onto the drum.
    • Note: Having a spotter to help guide the rope evenly across the drum is highly recommended, but this can safely be done solo.
