When tackling a budget off-road build, a winch is one of the most essential tools you can add according to Troy of Addicted Motors – and he would know – just ask him about his $1,000 1996 Land Rover Disco.
As part of his budget build, he replaced the old Warn winch with a new Graphite 12V 10K steel wire rope Superwinch SX Series set up. Because his Discovery was equipped with an ARB bumper, there was no dedicated winch plate, so he did a little creative mounting that included relocating the solenoid box and rerouting the power cables. He also used zip ties to secure his fairlead during the installation, – however – we obviously DO NOT recommend these modified mounting methods – they can be crazy unsafe.
The takeaway? It doesn’t have to be perfect or pretty to work well! After the installation, Troy was ready to get this truck out on the trails.

At Pearl’s Pond in Buckingham County, Virginia, Troy, along with a group of Land Rover enthusiasts, tackled some 30-year-old trails, clearing overgrowth and navigating muddy, treacherous terrain. Their convoy of D1s, D2s, a Range Rover Classic, and a Red 90 put their off-road skills to the test.
